About BYD
BYD Company Limited — short for "Build Your Dreams" — was founded in 1995 in Shenzhen, China by Wang Chuanfu. It began as a rechargeable battery manufacturer and is today the world's largest producer of new-energy vehicles, overtaking Tesla in global EV sales in 2023.
BYD entered India in 2007 with electronics manufacturing and launched passenger EVs locally in 2022 with the Atto 3. The India operation is headquartered in Chennai and led by Senior VP Sanjay Gopalakrishnan. BYD's edge comes from being fully vertically integrated — it designs and manufactures its own Blade Batteries, motors, semiconductors and software, allowing tight control over performance, safety and cost. The Blade Battery, an LFP cell-to-pack design, is widely regarded as the safest EV battery on sale.
